Lakeshore Park

“I’m confident that we made the right decision to work with The Land Trust for Tennessee to ensure Lakeshore Park will always be a place where Knoxville residents can play, gather, and enjoy – a place for everyone, forever.” Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero

Lakeshore Park – Knoxville, TN

Part of the 25 Projects for 25 Years series.

Located along the Tennessee River with views of the Great Smoky Mountains, Lakeshore Park is one of Knoxville’s most popular destinations. With over 200 acres of open spaces, trails, sports fields, and playgrounds, the park offers something for everyone—whether you’re walking, playing, or just enjoying the outdoors.

Lakeshore Park’s history dates back to the early 19th century when the land was used as hunting and fishing grounds by the Cherokee. In 1886, the East Tennessee Hospital for the Insane was built on the site and later became the Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, serving the region for over a century.

In 1993, the State of Tennessee leased 60 acres of the property to the City of Knoxville to create a public park. When the hospital closed in 2013, the City, in partnership with the nonprofit Lakeshore Park Conservancy, began transforming the land into the park we know today.

In 2016, The Land Trust for Tennessee partnered with the City of Knoxville to permanently protect Lakeshore Park through a conservation easement. This ensures that the park will remain a public space, accessible and open for future generations to enjoy.

Managed by the City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department and the Lakeshore Park Board of Directors, the park is designed to serve the whole community. Some of its features include:

  • Trails: Paved walking and running paths that wind through scenic areas.
  • Sports Facilities: Soccer fields, baseball fields, and playgrounds for kids.
  • Gathering Spaces: Picnic shelters, pavilions, and open areas for events or relaxation.
  • Views: Elevated spots offering clear views of the Tennessee River and Smoky Mountains.

With its history, amenities, and permanent protection, Lakeshore Park is a vital resource for Knoxville—now and in the future.
