Glen Leven Farm Coordinator
Matt Cottam joined The Land Trust for Tennessee family in September 2016 as our Glen Leven Farm Coordinator. Matt focuses on maintaining the farm’s agricultural and natural resources while helping to run the “Nature’s Classroom” field trip program for schoolchildren each spring and fall. Through his work at Glen Leven, he promotes healthy, active lifestyles for Nashville residents while educating farm visitors about conservation, agriculture, healthy produce and the outdoors.
This hands-on gentleman graduated from The University of Tennessee in 2011 with a degree in Environmental Studies. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, he focused his studies “on the interface between human society and the natural environment.” Once released from the classroom, Matt was chomping at the bit to apply his academic knowledge to real world experiences through active conservation work in California, Arizona, Utah, and Tennessee…exactly where he thrives…out under the open sky. In 2013, he took it to the next level, spending 12 weeks walking 1,100 miles across Tennessee as part of an ongoing documentary film project with the Tennessee Walking Men.
When not living his dream of working knee-deep in nature on the working landscape of Glen Leven Farm, Matt is likely backpacking and rock climbing fueled by a passion for big mountains and wild places. If he can’t make it to the wilderness, you’ll find him running one of the many trails around Nashville or reading anything within reach.
WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR JOB? I love my job because I have the amazing opportunity to work to preserve the unique cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes of Tennessee. I cannot think of a better way to give back to the state that made me who I am today!
EMAIL MATT if you have questions about anything that grows, buzzes, brays or moos on Glen Leven Farm.
